Sample Persuasive Speech

Topic:  Please Help Keep the World Safe
SP: I want to actuate you to support banning guns
Thesis: We should oppose gun ownership because guns are a weapon of violence and they increase the number of children who die each year which in turn makes people blind to the fact they are killing their own children.

Introduction: Question: How many of you think guns are necessary to protect yourself? Would you feel the same way if you knew how often guns kill children? I don't think so! Magazines usually tell people how beautiful and powerful guns are, and never mention how many children get hurt by guns everyday. But I am here to ask all of you to oppose gun ownership because the fact is that guns are a weapon of violence, they take more lives away every year, and they make people blind to the fact they are killing their own children.

  1.  Reason one: Having guns around the house creates the opportunity for lethal violence.
                A.      People with guns who have unstable feelings or tempers can lead to violent consequences
                          very easily.

                                  1.     My experience in a Chinese restaurant. (Explain)
                                  2.     A friend of my father shot his wife because of a simple argument.

  1. Reason two: Guns pose such a significant risk to children.
                 A.     Thousands of children dying by the gunfire each year.
                                1.     Statistic: Eight children every day; and more than 50 children every week were killed
                                        by  the gunfire. And every year, at least 4 to 5 times as many kids and teens suffer
                                        from non-fatal firearm injuries.

                                 2.     Do we really need guns in our society?

                    B.     The rate of firearm deaths of children 0-14 years old is nearly twelve times higher in the U.S.
                            than in 25 other developed nations combined.    

                                    1.    Statistic: In one year, firearms killed no children in Japan, 19 in Great Britain,
                                           57 in Germany, 109 in France, 153 in Canada,  and 5,285 in the United States. 
                                           (National Center for Health Statistics, 1997)
                                    2.    According to a study led by Matthew Miller found that in states where more
                                           guns are available, children are more likely to be victims of firearm- related deaths.

                                                    a.    Children aged 5 to 14 living in one of the five high-gun states were twice
                                                           as likely to commit suicide or to be murdered, three times as likely to die
                                                           from firearm homicide, seven times as likely to die from firearm suicide,

                                                           and 16 times as likely to die from a firearm-related accident.

                                                           The study suggests the higher death rates are largely related to gun

                                                           availability and are not due to difference in levels of poverty, education,
                                                           or  urbanization in these states. (Humphries as cited in Miller study, p. 1) 

                                                    b.     People kill people with the use of guns

  1. Reason three: Guns create more family tragedies.
                 A.       Life can be taken very easily by improper use of firearms
                                1.      Quote: "Kalie was my baby sister, she loved pink. We were playing with her dolls.
                                         I found a gun in the drawer.  It went off. I made Kalie go away. I hate me.

                                            " (Atwan, America Now, 2003. Page 260)

                   B.       People might think that they can keep their weapons properly, but if there are no guns at     

                            all, there would be no chance of any gun-related  accidents.  

                   C.       Just think of Columbine High School and the senseless shootings there and all the families

                             impacted by that tragedy.

Conclusion: Bullets cannot be taken back, and the profit of firearm businesses cannot buy the lives that have been taken by firearms; therefore, we need to oppose gun ownership. I challenge you, the audience, to oppose gun ownership and save a life!

The three main parts of your speech are the ABC:

Attention or Introduction, then comes the main Body of the speech, and ends in the Conclusion.


Now focusing on the first part, the Attention or Introduction there are 6 smaller parts, the abcdef:

Attention of the audience is gained, how the speaker Bonds and links to each audience member by creating "hooks" into their everyday experience.

The exact hooks will depend on your audience research.

There is the establishment of the Speaker's Credentials, identification of the speech's Destination or outcome, and then an Explanation of the Map to get to the destination.  Then finally a Flow statement to transition or link into the Body of your speech.

It's as simple as A B C D E F !

Note also how the speech is built,

    how it builds with evidence, and
        how it finally challenges the audience.

A sample will make this more clear.

Note that the persuasive speech sample used was a real speech and about a technology which was not as pervasive as now.  Use it as an example of how ABC and abcdef works to structure a speech.


A Persuasive Speech Sample

A. Attention

"Tells your audience what you are going to tell them"
and establishes the foundation for your speech.
A good Introduction 'draws the map' for the journey.
For a Persuasive Speech an Introduction consists of

1. Attention-Getter

A statement, visual or sound
(or combination)that startles, gains attention
and makes your audience sit up....

Who here communicates with others?

Today, I want to describe to you what I call the 8th Wonder of the World. This wonder is right up there with the Pyramids, with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, with the Collossus of Rhodes. It is not though of the ancient world. It is though a marvel of engineering and cooperation amongst the nations of the world.

Today as well as the telephone, I use the Internet, I use eMail.

The Internet is a way of connecting computers together around the world using the telephone cables. eMail is electronic mail that is distributed across the Internet.

Putting these together, I can communicate anywhere anytime.

Did you know, that "the number of emails sent on an average day triples every few years".  Do you know that they are all asleep in Australia? Last year I rang to ask a business question to only get the night security guard. It was good of him to take my call.

Now I email at any time and receive the needed information back as soon as the other office is open.

2.  Bond

Link-to Audience: Identify a personal
connection in the audiences' life, eg their
use of the 'device' or system, or their
emotional experience (grief and sorrow, happiness).

How many here use the telephone to connect with another?

Today we use a large amount of technology to live, communicate, and relate.

To speak with another: devices like the telephone, mobile telephone or cell phone. To access information: television, cable TV, satellites, Google and even Netflix. To bank: we use ATMs To travel: vehicles, planes and trains To get to a destination: Global positioning systems (GPS) guide airplanes.

We use technology every day to live.               

Think of your kitchen, car, office, cinema, your local shopping centre. Think of the technology you use, you rely on.

What would it be like WITHOUT technology in our day?

3.  "Credentials" of Speaker (Credibility)

Demonstrate
how you are an 'expert' through
your own use, experience or study.

I use eMail every day in my work, my business and for personal communications. I discovered eMail when I was studying many years ago. It was used as THE communication medium between the lecturers and between colleagues in my study team. We relied on eMail.

4.  Destination / Objective Sentence

State clearly
why you are speaking at this moment.
State your Goal, Thesis or what
you expect as an Outcome.
State your Destination.

An example may be .. "This evening/today
I am here to convince you that ....
is the most effective way to do business today"

Today, I want to share my insights into this amazing communication method, and convince you of its hidden potential, in YOUR life today.

5. Explain the Map to my Destination

Preview of Speech: Briefly outline what you will cover in
your persuasive speech. This is where you will ...
"Tell what you are going to tell them"

What will we look at in the next few minutes? Firstly, a quick look at how the Internet and eMail has shrunk the world. Secondly, how business has been revolutionised, and Thirdly, how personal relations are enhanced by these new technologies, that's right, personal relations! Who ever thought a computer would help relationships.

6. Flow or Transition or Link

A flow or transition is how you move
from one section or point to the next.
It is a linking idea. You could say ...
"Let's begin by ...", "Let's start with ..."
or I prefer "Let's consider ..."

The Internet runs on energy: on electricity. How fast does electricity flow? How fast does a light switch turn on when you switch it? How fast does sound come from a radio when it is switched on? Let's now switch on email.

So that is ABCDEF:
Attention, Bonding with everyday "hooks", your Credentials, Destination map, Explanation of the map and Flow or transition to the Body of your speech.


B. Body of your Speech

The Body of your speech is where the
detail is found and is best contained in THREE points
(you can have more, but don't confuse your audience).
For a Persuasive Speech, this is where you will ...
"Tell them"

1. Main Point #1

State Point 1
The world is shrinking with the advent of the Internet and in particular, eMail.

State a Reason
Why is this occurring? Because, eMail is easy to use.
eMail is very fast to both send and to receive.
eMail overcomes time barriers.

Give an Example
Recently when planning a holiday in England, the Internet and eMail were used to book hotels and hire cars organised across multiple time zones. No more ringing and trying to get people who are in bed other than at a sales desk. How often have you thought "don't they ever wake up over there?" I did.

Restate the Point
The world is in deed shrinking with the advent of email.

Transition: Create a linking statement to Point 2.


As the world shrinks through communication technologies,
it must be easier to do business.

2. Main Point #2

State Point 2

eMail has revolutionised business.
Business can now literally operate at the speed of light.
"eMail is growing at a rate of 66% annually, email is the most common way for business people to communicate " (Source: IAAAP / ePolicy Institute news release: April 18, 2002)

State a Reason
eMail is simple easy to use and fast. eMail reduces the formalities of paper-based title pages and wording in say a Sales quote eMail makes retrieving an old eMail easy when comparing negotiations.
The Internet gives "instant" access to information from anywhere in the world.

Give an Example
From my desktop I can negotiate the best price for a transaction regardless where the shop is in the world. In fact I have more suppliers to choose from.
Telephone tag (when you ring and they are out) is eliminated.
Publishing words or pictures is simple. Anyone can publish on the Internet.
I can stay in touch with the office anytime when I am out of the office, using the Internet and eMail.

Restate the Point
The Internet and eMail has revolutionised business and enables business to be forever open conducting business 24 x 7 (24 hours by 7 days).

Transition: Create a linking statement to Point 3

The Internet and eMail can even
bring friends closer together.

3. Main Point #3

State Point 3
The Internet and eMail enhances personal relations eMail can even explode personal relationships in a new dimension.

State a Reason
eMail is a powerful complementer of the older technologies: telephone, letters ...
No stamps, no paper, no envelopes, no trips to/from the postbox.
Your message can be short, succinct and to the point. Stay in touch when do not wish to speak.
- The Receiver of your message does not have to be home when you 'write'.
- Unlimited interactions via a computer (written, voice, image, music, information) versus limited via telephone (voice)
- Internet and eMail can bring together countless numbers of people sharing the same interests, eg chat rooms and instant messaging using ICQ, AOL and MSN

Give an Example
Stay in touch regardless of location:
I eMailed my son when he was in England
I eMail to a busy sister in another State - because she is rarely home, using eMail means the call is not missed if I was to telephone.

Restate the Point
When it comes personal relations, eMail enables cheap effective communications which are never missed, unlike the telephone. They are there when you connect to the Internet.

Transition: Create a linking statement to the
Conclusion, eg "Let's summarise ..." or
"Can we consider these main points ..."

The Internet and eMail has shrunk the world, enabled more timely business to occur and can enhance personal relationships and friendships.

C. Conclusion

"Tell them what you have told them"

1. Again state your destination >
Restate your outcome, your proposition or hypothesis:

Today we have explored a powerful vehicle called the Internet, and an effective tool for communication called eMail.

Today you have heard of the amazing hidden potential that eMail can bring to YOUR life.
